If you "learn by doing", then this is a great book for beginners learning Microsoft Access 2010
By David P. Graf
I have been involved in computing for over thirty-five years. To give you some idea of what this means, I started in the days prior to PCs when punch cards were king and "big iron" mainframes ruled the roost. A good chunk of my time has involved direct contact with and support of clients. For example, back in the early 80's I was teaching classes on how to set up relational database applications. And so, I've always been on the lookout for tools that would make it easier for clients to learn how to do things for themselves. Everyone has a different learning style and so not one style is perfect for everyone. However, if you are the kind of person who can read through the text and will spend the time to do the exercises, then this book is a great introduction to Microsoft Access 2010. Of course, it's a big help if you have someone who can answer a quick question or two in case you get stuck. No book is perfect but it rates five stars in my opinion for its readable style and detailed instructions. I learn far more through working with a new tool than by just watching someone talk about it in a class. If this is your learning style, then I can strongly recommend this book for your consideration.

The book is very good. It walks you through each step and is very easy to follow for new comers to Access. I have the same book for Word and Excel and their both just as good as this one.

Great book. Shows everything in detail and has great examples to follow along. I wish it talked about the VB parts a little better, but it is a great intro book.

Weimar Culture and Quantum Mechanics: Selected Papers

This volume reprints Paul Forman's classic papers on the history of physics in post-World War I Germany and the invention of quantum mechanics. The Forman thesis has become famous as the first argument in favor of the cultural conditioning of scientific knowledge, in particular for its demonstration of the historical connection between the culture of Weimar Germany - known for its irrationality and antiscientism - and the emerging concept of quantum acausality. At the 2007 international conference in Vancouver, Canada, leading historians of physics discussed the implications of the Forman thesis in the historiography of modern science. Their papers collected in this volume represent a cutting-edge research on the history of quantum revolution.

Cravings: Recipes for All the Food You Want to Eat, by Chrissy Teigen, Adeena Sussman

Maybe she’s on a photo shoot in Zanzibar. Maybe she’s making people laugh on TV. But all Chrissy Teigen really wants to do is talk about dinner. Or breakfast. Lunch gets some love, too.
For years, she’s been collecting, cooking, and Instagramming her favorite recipes, and here they are: from breakfast all day to John’s famous fried chicken with spicy honey butter to her mom’s Thai classics.
Salty, spicy, saucy, and fun as sin (that’s the food, but that’s Chrissy, too), these dishes are for family, for date night at home, for party time, and for a few life-sucks moments (salads). You’ll learn the importance of chili peppers, the secret to cheesy-cheeseless eggs, and life tips like how to use bacon as a home fragrance, the single best way to wake up in the morning, and how not to overthink men or Brussels sprouts. Because for Chrissy Teigen, cooking, eating, life, and love are one and the same.

Review
"Even the most celebrity-cookbook-skeptical reader will find it hard not to enjoy this tome from supermodel Chrissy Teigen. With self-deprecating wit and down-to-earth charm, Teigen posits herself as an enthusiastic home cook and passionate eater." --Publisher's Weekly

"Chrissy Teigen’s Cravings is a cookbook with realistic recipes for people who like it “spicy, salty, sticky, crunchy, juicy, oozy,” and if you have some kind of prejudice against supermodels who unabashedly love Taco Bell, there’s nothing I can do to help you. It’s fun to read, with a recipe for everyone with two eyes, a stomach, and a fork. Frito pie? A chapter called “Sh*t on toast”? Absurd sexy photo shoots with chicken wings? What’s not to love? I didn’t even mention the bulldogs yet. If there’s one thing we can all learn from Teigen, it’s not to judge a cookbook by its cover." -- Bon Appetit

“Maybe the best celebrity cookbook of all time.”-- SELF

“Cravings is a perfect cookbook… it’s a must-buy—never daunting, and filled with near-pornographic images of hearty, meaty, cheesy food that would make Gwyneth Paltrow explode. As a culmination of everything Teigen has built over the past few years, it’s brilliant.” – Jezebel

“Cravings… lives up to the hype 100 percent.”-- PopSugar

“We love this cookbook. It's full of things we actually want to eat.” -- Refinery 29

“[Cravings] is dripping with energy and enthusiasm and, most of all, joy. Do not discount the value of joy. It's far too rare in food writing, and I know professionals who could learn a thing or two about joy from Teigen.” -- Epicurious

“Teigen is notoriously funny, and her sense of humor comes through here, as does her self-awareness — she tackles the issue of credibility early and often, always presenting herself more as a cooking enthusiast than as an expert.” -- Eater

“When was the last time you laughed out loud at a cookbook? So long ago you can't remember, which is enough of a reason to give Chrissy Teigen's first book a spin. But it's the recipes that'll keep you coming back.” -- Saveur

So good. I want to make everything.
By Brianna Light
I bought the book yesterday and immediately made something out of it for dinner last night. It was so delushious (haha) and even two ten year old boys were fans. I made the sweet chili and mustard glazed salmon with the Thai green bean salad. I also made the coconut rice but I riced cauliflower through the food processor instead since we are one of those pain in the ass gluten-free (read: grain-free completely for just myself) households (because of me so I can say that lol). I was so happy with the cookbook because even though she uses so many carby and gluteny things, I can still substitute most of it without losing the idea of the dish. I'm so happy with this cookbook, and if your weird like me and my mom who will actually sit down and read through a cookbook, it's very much Chrissy Teigan's voice and therefore hilarious. You won't be disappointed!

Shockingly Fantastic
By Paul Post
Yes. That Chrissy Teigen.

One phrase review of this cookbook: Shockingly Fantastic

Like, shocked shocked. Stunned. Surprised. Unexpected feelings.

Ok, composing self to write actual sentences.

I fully expected to hate-read this cookbook. Sure, I enjoy a lot of Chrissy Teigen's tweets. She's that rare famous person who makes themselves extremely publicly accessible, but in an actual authentic way. Her online presence doesn't appear to be artfully constructed by a PR firm. She replies to trolls. She talks about buying giant bear stuffed animals from shopping TV. She talks about her husband in a normal, loving, supportive way. She's a reminder that yes, celebrity is another plane of existence, but, it's still a career, and she's still a human being.

I knew that she enjoyed cooking. Or, well, attempted a lot of cooking. Her twitter feed contains a lot of posts about failed attempts in the kitchen. It led me to believe Teigen tried to make a lot of food, but that it probably turned out kinda terribly most of the time. So, I selected this cookbook to review just to see what a mess it would be. This celebrity trying to be all cookbook-ey. I expected one of those books with a "If you're a super rich person like me, you can have your housekeeper make you gluten-free llama milk infused baby kangaroo burgers too" tone. I promised I would give a recipe or two a try, but that I was probably going to pass this book along to someone else for their amusement.

Anyway.

I. Was. Wrong.

This cookbook is awesome.

The recipes? They're GREAT. Accessible. Unique, but familiar. Delicious. Unpretentious. Tasty. Good. Yummy. Things I will make again. Dare I say, some new favorites even?

Wow. It's just so good. Five star rating worthy. A book deserving of early admission to Food52's Piglet 2017 tournament (even though it does not have the pedigree of the usual entrants).

Enough about my surprise about this book. Let's talk about the book itself and why I love it, why I think you might like it.

Most importantly: The recipes

As I do with most cookbooks where I start to see a recipe or two, or three, early in the book that I want to make. I started a list. All the recipes I want to try. Maybe not today, but someday. So, I started that list in the breakfast section. That Dutch Baby Pancake looks tasty. Crab Cakes Benedict - wow, I think I could make this. Bacon Hash Browns? Sign me up. I kept going. Soup. Salads. Noodles. Thai. Party. Vegetables. Supper (this one was hard - my parents call it supper - I don't - it'd dinner - but... I let it go). My list had 53 recipes on it. 53. The book only has 95-ish or so recipes, and I want to make over half of them. That's an incredible accomplishment.

So, how does this recipes perform in practice? Will our three-and-a-half year old eat them? Are the ingredient lists accurate? Do the steps make sense? Does this feel like a well-tested recipe?

Dutch Baby Pancake: Super easy to make. Beautifully random squiggly rise in the oven. Delicious. Six thumbs up. Kid/family-approved.

Cobb Salad with Honey Mustard Ranch Dressing: An actual text I sent to my wife: "&^%$, this is a good salad". The seasoning on the chicken was fantastic. Just spicy enough to get a bunch of flavor out without passing toddler-acceptable levels. The charred corn was super tasty. The dressing. THAT dressing! The hard boiled eggs. That our toddler ate. That she had never eaten before. The combination. This was one of the best salads I have ever eaten, much less prepared (there are a lot of steps with this one, and there's a whole bunch of chopping, but it's an extremely well-written recipe). Family Favorite List addition.

Sesame Chicken Noodles: This is a really well-constructed recipe (you use the same water you boil the chicken in to cook the pasta). It's also really really really good. The sesame-based sauce for the noodles is lick your fingers tasty. The recipe says it serves 4 as a light dinner. Our 2.25 diners licked the pot clean.

Italian Sausage Meatloaf: This is a really good recipe - adding Italian Sausage to meatloaf is brilliant - but I screwed it up a little. I tried to make it on a solo parent weeknight, so I rushed a little and didn't mix it up as fully as I should have which led to some mushy breadcrumb only sections. It also needed more time in the oven than the recipe's "about 1 hour" step. That seems to be common with my latest meatloaf cookery though, so it's not a fault of Chrissy's. My minor related suggestion here though would be to add a "cook to XXX degrees" step. Overall, this turned out great tasting and I would make it again. On a weekend. When I can give it the proper attention.

Skillet-charred Fish Tacos: Five stars. These were just phenomenal. The spice rub for the tilapia was great. The toddler loved the fish. Kelley loved the tacos. I loved the tacos. I ate fish taco leftovers the next day. We'll make this again. Probably soon.

Literally Stovetop Pork Chops: We don't usually bread our pork chops. I've certainly never thought, "Hey, maybe let's get some Stovetop Stuffing mix and bread our pork chops with that." But, that's what this recipe calls for. And, well, I mean, broken record here, but, it's delicious. It's so good that when I asked our daughter a week later what she wanted for dinner, she said, "Hmmm.... Pork Chops!"

Pad Grapow Chicken (Basil Chicken): This recipe is from the tiny "Thai Mom" section of the cookbook and it makes me kinda hope for a future Thai Mom specific book. I'm a big fan of Thai food. Kelley is a big fan of Thai food. Our daughter doesn't know a lot about specific International cuisines yet. This recipe was soooooo good. I want to make it again with basil fresh from the garden, because it was delicious with store bought stuff, but I think it would be heavenly with some leaves pulled fresh from the stalk.

Buttery Glazed Green Beans: On to a vegetable. A side dish. A simple combination of sugar and water and green beans and butter. Easy recipe, great, slightly crispy green beans.

Warm Corn Salad: This is actually a component of the Seared Scallops recipe that I wanted to make, but couldn't find the right scallops for, so we pivoted and had Sole instead. But, I still make the corn salad. And I'm glad I did. In fact, even my not-really-that-big-of-a-fan-of-corn spouse said, "This salad is really good, I like how this corn is made." So, yeah, approved.

A couple of other review points.

The organization of the book is nice. I like having the breakfast vs salad vs noodles vs dinner type sections. I do think she got a little too cutesy with the "@*#$& on Toast" and "Stuff that Seems Complicated But Isn't" sections. I get it, I just don't think it was needed.

The recipe introductions are right in line with the tone of Chrissy Teigen. A little snarky, a little heartfelt, a lot personal. I like hearing about the background of the recipes. The stuff that reminds her of her mom, or her dad, or that thing that John Legend made that everyone loves. I also like the humor. But. In small doses. If you love love love all of of Chrissy Teigen's tweets, then by all means, sit down and read this cookbook cover-to-cover. You'll love it. On the other hand, if you just like her sense of humor, I might recommend reading the book in small portions. I find that for me, a small dose of Teigen goes a long way. In no way does this detract from the greatness of the food you will make based on this book, but just be forewarned.

Overall, I really really like this cookbook. At first I thought it was just because it exceeded my expectations so greatly, but after further analysis, I think it's because it contains really delicious recipes, the recipes themselves are very well-written, and it's obvious that the recipes have been well-tested. I could cook exclusively from this book for a month and we'd be happy family.

You should definitely buy this book if you're a huge fan of Chrissy Teigen. But, surprisingly, you should also buy this book if you simply love good food.

I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review.

Truly "food you want to eat"!
By Mludwig
Every single thing in this cookbook looks delicious! Honestly, it does. The recipes are not "healthy" or "light." It's not what you would expect from a supermodel! But she explains how she wants every single bite she eats to be delicious, and all of these recipes fit the bill. Her spunky attitude shines throughout the entire book, making it also a fun read and not just a cookbook. I am a cookbook collector/obsessor, and I can tell this will become one of my all tie favorites! I literally can't wait to start cooking!!

Since purchasing I have cooked the following recipes:

-Capon's Chrissy Burger
-John's Crispy Roasted Potatoes
-Chinese Chicken Salad
-Lemony Arugula Spaghetti Cacio e Pepe
-Sweet Chili & Mustard Glazed Salmon
-Thai Pounded Papaya Salad
-Grilled Garlic Soy Shrimp
-Chicken Lettuce Wraps (served over rice)
-Pad Grapow Chicken (Basil Chicken)
-Roasted Cauliflower, Orzo & Feta Salad
-Sriracha Caesar Salad (with added chicken)
-Chipotle Honey Chicken

All but one were really good! The method of roasting the potatoes made them much crispier than usual. I would make everything again except the glazed salmon. The method of cooking didn't turn out well, and I wasn't crazy about the sauce. I made the papaya salad with spiralized cucumber (as a suggestion in the recipe intro) and it was good, but I would probably leave the fish sauce out as it was too strong for me. But the Cacio e Pepe--SO GOOD!! I would make this everyday. The sriracha Caesar was really thick--I wonder if subbing a few tablespoons of buttermilk for some mayo would help. Still good! But the little garlic toasts were too salty. Less salt next time

In Paradise: A Novel, by Peter Matthiessen

The bestselling final novel by a writer of incomparable range, power, and achievement, a three-time winner of the National Book Award.

Peter Matthiessen was a literary legend, the author of more than thirty acclaimed books. In this, his final novel, he confronts the legacy of evil, and our unquenchable desire to wrest good from it.

One week in late autumn of 1996, a group gathers at the site of a former death camp. They offer prayer at the crematoria and meditate in all weathers on the selection platform. They eat and sleep in the sparse quarters of the Nazi officers who, half a century before, sent more than a million Jews in this camp to their deaths. Clements Olin has joined them, in order to complete his research on the strange suicide of a survivor. As the days pass, tensions both political and personal surface among the participants, stripping away any easy pretense to resolution or healing. Caught in the grip of emotions and impulses of bewildering intensity, Olin is forced to abandon his observer’s role and to bear witness, not only to his family’s ambiguous history but to his own.

Profoundly thought-provoking, In Paradise is a fitting coda to the luminous career of a writer who was “for all readers. He was for the world” (National Geographic).

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, April 2014: Peter Matthiessen, three-time National Book Award winner and esteemed author of both fiction and nonfiction, has never backed away from writing about difficult subjects. In his new novel In Paradise, he sets his story in the mid-'90s at a spiritual retreat at Auschwitz. The novel centers around Clements Olin, an American academic of Polish decent who has traveled to the concentration camp for reasons both spiritual and personal. While Olin makes his own journey, dealing with the bouts of sadness, horror, and absurdity--and even occasional joy--that accompany such a retreat, we are introduced to a group of characters all experiencing their own version of observance and remembrance. The result is a novel that is as profound as anything that Matthiessen has written before. --Chris Schluep

Praise for Peter Matthiessen:

“You could well school yourself as a young American writer, in the early 21st century, by reading and then rereading the works of Peter Matthiessen. But of course he wasn't just a writer's writer; he was for all readers. He was for the world.” --National Geographic

Praise for IN PARADISE:

“Matthiessen’s descriptions are poetic and scarifying…he creates indelible vignettes about what remains and what took place here. Like the rest of Matthiessen’s vast body of work, “In Paradise” leads us into questions that define our most profound mysteries.”--The Washington Post

“The beauty of [In Paradise] comes in [Matthiessen’s] powerful descriptions. With his command of the language, he can add something new and profound to that vast library of Holocaust literature. In Paradise allows Peter Matthiessen to once again demonstrate that he remains one of our most powerful writers.”--The Miami Herald

“The conflict between the drama of the self and its surrender in the shadow of the Holocaust is Matthiessen's bold subject...powerful.” –New York Review of Books “Peter Matthiessen's In Paradise is a deeply intelligent study of Holocaust remembrance… bleakly funny… [and] eloquent” --The Wall Street Journal

“A fitting coda to [Matthiessen’s] career… Where better to look for some sort of human essence than in a landscape that embodies us at our worst?...This is the key message of Matthiessen’s life and writing -- that we are intricate, thorny, inconsistent, that the lines between good and bad blur within us, that we are capable of anything. The only choice is to remain conscious, to engage with openness.” --Los Angeles Times

“Written with a young man’s energy, In Paradise possesses an old man’s wisdom, which eschews the presumptions of age and the easy attainment of certitude." –The Daily Beast “In Paradise is a fitting final addition to Matthiessen's oeuvre, in that it combines moral seriousness and imagination grounded in the world with elegance of expression and a willingness to take risk.” --National Geographic

“[In Paradise] … provides rare insight into the dark magnetism of a brutal landmark. What drives a survivor to return? What inspires conflicted visitors to join hands in spontaneous dancing? Matthiessen’s courage and clarity in addressing this topic [were] signal virtues of his career.” --Newsday

“In Paradise is…contemplative and moving, and in its haunting story of Holocaust survivors who revisit Auschwitz, we find one of the last century’s greatest authors penning a book worthy of his legacy.” --Grantland

“Matthiessen’s writing flexes the same kind of muscularity as others of his generation— Vonnegut, Styron, Doctorow—but his devotion to Zen Buddhism results in a spiritual journey that’s palatable even to the non-spiritual… [his characters] are fully realized people, and within them are the kernels of horror and joy shared by all of humanity” --A.V. Club

“Matthiessen can write with ecstatic beauty… In his new novel, In Paradise, he takes what may be his deepest look yet into the abyss…Profound and fiercely fresh.” --Tampa Bay Times

"An ambitious tale that tries to do nothing less than achieve some understanding of 20th century Europe’s defining event, the Holocaust.” --Buffalo News

“An eloquently written and thought-provoking novel… In Paradise demonstrates that Peter Matthiessen remained a vital part of America’s contemporary literary scene, an unflinching original who continued to write provocative narratives.” --Counterpunch

“Short and austere… Clements’ story and those of the others are anguished inquiries, harrowing reassessments and attempts — emotional, artistic and spiritual — to grasp the ungraspable.” --Minneapolis Star Tribune

“[In Paradise] deftly and ruthlessly pursues the battles that we face, both individually and also in dialogue with others, when we try to engage with horrors that can never be named.” --The Jewish Book Council

“An earnest, informed, often insightful and…subtle novel.” --Christian Science Monitor

“Contains some of the most frightening and passionate writing of Matthiessen’s long career … With In Paradise, Peter Matthiessen has created philosophical and moral cacophony of lasting worth and, indeed, of a strange power. It belongs on the shelf beside At Play in the Fields of the Lord, Far Tortuga, and Shadow Country. Of how many books can that be said?” --Open Letters Monthly

"Not a mere recounting but a persuasive meditation on Auschwitz’s history and mythology...Matthiessen uses scenes of confrontation, recollection, bitterness, and selfexamination to trace aspects of culture that led to the Holocaust and that still reverberate today." --Library Journal (starred review)

"Matthiessen…ponders Auschwitz decades after the Holocaust, in a novel that’s philosophical, mordant and surprisingly romantic…An admirable…study of the meaning of survivorship." --Kirkus Reviews

From Booklist
*Starred Review* After participating in three Zen retreats at Auschwitz, Matthiessen addresses that experience with what, at 86, may very well be his final novel. With In Paradise, the two-time National Book Award–winner doesn’t shy away from boldly tackling the most profound of subjects. And as protagonist Clements Olin wonders, what “fresh insights into the horror of the camps” remain to be had, especially from someone without direct experience of the camp? Olin, a Polish-born American scholar and “Holocaust authority,” joins an ecumenical group that includes Germans, Poles, Israelis, Jews, Catholic nuns, and Zen Buddhists at the death camp for “a fortnight of homage, prayer, and silent meditation . . . to bear witness lest the world forget man’s depthless capacity for evil.” Some attend to alleviate shame or guilt, while others are tourists and Holocaust voyeurs and still others are looking for some sort of closure or healing. But earnestness is overrun with grievances as, Olin observes, “behind all the good will, there are so many old hates.” Arguments, accusations, and old resentments erupt, disrupting any silent meditation. Olin’s motivations for attending are initially obscure, but we learn that his family might not all have escaped to the U.S. when the Nazis came to power in Poland. Matthiessen expertly raises the challenges and the difficulties inherent in addressing this subject matter, proving, as the muralist Malan says, that the creation of art “is the only path that might lead toward the apprehension of that ultimate evil . . . that the only way to understand such evil is to reimagine it.” HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: The world-renowned naturalist and author Peter Matthiessen, in his first work of fiction since the 2008 National Book Award winner, Shadow Country, pens what may be the 86-year-old author’s “last word” in this powerful novel about the Holocaust. --Ben Segedin

“In Paradise is…contemplative and moving, and in its haunting story of Holocaust survivors who revisit Auschwitz, we find one of the last century’s greatest authors penning a book worthy of his legacy.” –Grantland

“Matthiessen’s writing flexes the same kind of muscularity as others of his generation—Vonnegut, Styron, Doctorow—but his devotion to Zen Buddhism results in a spiritual journey that’s palatable even to the non-spiritual… [his characters] are fully realized people, and within them are the kernels of horror and joy shared by all of humanity” –A.V. Club

“Matthiessen can write with ecstatic beauty… In his new novel, In Paradise, he takes what may be his deepest look yet into the abyss…Profound and fiercely fresh.”–Tampa Bay Times

"An ambitious tale that tries to do nothing less than achieve some understanding of 20th century Europe’s defining event, the Holocaust.”–Buffalo News

“An eloquently written and thought-provoking novel… In Paradise demonstrates that Peter Matthiessen remained a vital part of America’s contemporary literary scene, an unflinching original who continued to write provocative narratives.” –Counterpunch

“Short and austere… Clements’ story and those of the others are anguished inquiries, harrowing reassessments and attempts — emotional, artistic and spiritual — to grasp the ungraspable.” –Minneapolis Star Tribune

“[In Paradise] deftly and ruthlessly pursues the battles that we face, both individually and also in dialogue with others, when we try to engage with horrors that can never be named.”–The Jewish Book Council

“An earnest, informed, often insightful and…subtle novel.” –Christian Science Monitor

Of how many books can that be said?”–Open Letters Monthly

“The two-time National Book Award–winner doesn’t shy away from boldly tackling the most profound of subjects… Matthiessen expertly raises the challenges and the difficulties inherent in addressing this subject matter, proving…that the creation of art “is the only path that might lead toward the apprehension of that ultimate evil . . . [that] the only way to understand such evil is to reimagine it.” –Booklist (starred review)

"Not a mere recounting but a persuasive meditation on Auschwitz’s history and mythology...Matthiessen uses scenes of confrontation, recollection, bitterness, and self-examination to trace aspects of culture that led to the Holocaust and that still reverberate today."
–Library Journal (starred review)

"Matthiessen…ponders Auschwitz decades after the Holocaust, in a novel that’s philosophical, mordant and surprisingly romantic…An admirable…study of the meaning of survivorship." –Kirkus Reviews

Wild in our breast for centuries
By Daniel Myers
It’s a more than daunting task to review this work by Peter Matthiessen, whom I and many others regard as one of the two or three finest living American writers: A work set in Auschwitz during the 1990s whose main character, Clements Olin, an alter ego of the author himself, who comes, primarily, as it turns out, to see if he can discover anything about the woman who was his mother. But that’s not what makes it hard to review. Everyone who attends this gathering to “bear witness” is spiritually stripped bare during the novel and taken to task for sentimentality, lies and sloppy thinking, including: American Jews, Israeli Jews, Poles, Roman Catholics, Muslims, Auschwitz survivors and, not least, Zen adherents such as Clements Olin himself. The very term “bear witness” is taken to task as rank hypocrisy and sentimentalism, mainly by the character known through most of the book as Earwig. Every participant has his or her perversities, hatreds, deep character flaws. There is an entire chapter entitled “Dancing At Auschwitz” concerning a dance held by some of the participants in the “bear witness” gathering and the repercussions and recriminations that follow it. The very title of the chapter is bound to throw many off, never mind the contents. About these things, all I can do is let the prospective reader know what to expect. Pray, don’t approach the book with a cocksure attitude towards the Holocaust, save that it happened. The only ones - and none of them are at the gathering - who come across as thoroughly in the wrong are those who deny that the genocide took place.

So, you’re forewarned about all that. The strengths of the book, it seems to me, remain Matthiessen’s fearless, virtuosic writing and what to me is the pith of the novel, encapsulated in Anna Akhmatova’s poem which serves as the epigraph to the book which ends::

“- something not known to anyone at all
But wild in our breast for centuries.”

Neither the poet nor Clements Olin can give this thing a name, but it has to do with something deep in the heart of man, something to do with falling in love, something so akin to to despair, that it might be called despair’s obverse side. But this meditation on human heartbreak and loss, on all the genocides which have happened, which are happening and which shall happen in mankind’s sojourn on the Earth is not for the sappy nor for those who have some Manichean view of the universe. If you’re absolutely sure that you’re in the right, this book will flay you alive.

I don’t think I’m giving anything away by apprising the would-be reader that the book does not end on a cheerful note, but rather a heartbroken one. Still...in the penultimate scene, Clements visits a Polish cathedral, famed for its stained glass, and is alone in it during a thunderstorm:

“In the high windows, ice blues of the firmament pierce wild red cells; all Heaven has been murdered, set afire. The winter sunlight comes and goes, shadows sweep past; the burning panes are lashed by sheets of rain. In that instant, as a sun shaft reignites the colors, the fire blood, the organ shriek, bind his mortal senses hard and tight as a pennant whipped by wind round its pole.”

We have this splendour of prose which, though it leave you feeling as a pennant whipped by wind round its pole, will also leave you in awe that we still have a writer of Matthiessen’s scope and prescience under the sun.

"No butterflies live here"
By Jim Tenuto
If you read Peter Matthiessen you must have wondered if his obsession with E.J. Watson would ever wane. His decades long examination into the life and death of one of Florida’s most colorful scoundrels and visionaries spanned thousands of pages.

IN PARADISE finds Matthiessen’s talents turned to the Holocaust and the result is a powerful, morally ambiguous examination of our responses to the Shoah. D. Clements Olin is the putative protagonist of the novel, the son of a Polish calvary officer who fled, along with his landed and titled parents, before Germany’s invasion of Poland in the years that preceded World War II. Olin’s mother…well, let’s leave that to the book.

Olin searches for family and emotions. He is a near affectless man, unsuccessful in marriage, marginally competent in his career, which, of course, is academia. Ostensibly he is examining the life of Tadeusz Borowski, a Polish poet who survived the camps only to commit suicide in 1951 three days after the birth of his daughter.

He joins a disparate group that visits Auschwitz and Birkenau. Germans who want to expiate a national guilt, Catholic clergy who bristle at the Church’s blind eye during the Final Solution, Poles who steadfastly claim ignorance of what occurred under their very eyes, and Jews—survivors and others—who return to confirm man’s capacity for evil.

Yet even the survivors are challenged. In surviving the camps many are asked what they had to do to live through the horror. “Reading Borowski was Olin’s first exposure to the swarming scene of terror on this platform, the howls of lost children running everywhere and nowhere ‘like wild dogs,’ the young mother so frantic to be spared that she forsakes the little boy calling Mama! Mama! Who runs behind here (‘Oh no, sir! He’s not mine!’), casting away the last of her humanity for a few more hours of excruciating life.”

The most intriguing character is G. Earwig, an improbably name, “unattached” pilgrim, whose caustic outbursts and outrageous comments, ecumenically directed at everyone, make him the pariah of the group.

The writing about the camps is spare, wintry, a landscape devoid of life. In one of the preserved barracks “a wistful child has scrawled on the wall: ‘No butterflies live here.’” This poignant image is somehow more powerful than the hill of empty shoes or the piles of human hair.

Set in 1996, amidst the turmoil and renewed genocide in Eastern Europe, IN PARADISE offers a bleak, hopeless view of man.

No recompense, no reward, no compromise
By Thomas F. Dillingham
Readers familiar with Peter Matthiessen's earlier novels will find some qualities that they already value, but in many ways this is a new direction for Matthiessen, an uncompromising and occasionally fierce exploration of the ways human evil flourishes, as well as the bewilderment, even despair, those who try to oppose evil may experience at their repeated failures. Matthiessen quotes a poem by Anna Akhmatova as an epigraph--it begins "Everything is plundered, betrayed, sold,/Death's black wing scrapes the air," and that is fair warning. A visit to Auschwitz--the most notorious in some ways of the Nazi death camps--is not an opportunity to salve one's personal guilt, nor to plump up one's easy conscience and self-esteem, as the central character, Prof. Clements Olin, discovers, to his pain but also, perhaps, toward his enlightenment.

There is nothing simple about this narrative, though the situation can sound simple: Prof. Olin, a student of modern Slavic literature with a special interest in the works that emerged from the Holocaust, arrives in Poland on his way to Auschwitz, where he is to join (more as an observer than participant, or so he thinks) an ecumenical religious group planning to spend days on the selection ramp, meditating and witnessing on behalf of the murdered millions. Olin (whose family name has a history as that of an aristocratic family, Olinsky, who held property in the vicinity of Oswiecim) is also, secretly, in search of information about his mother, who did not leave for America when Olin's father and grandparents fled.

Olin encounters a wide variety of people--a "Nordic-Jew" as his roommate; a group of Zen meditators; Jewish groups from Israel and America, German descendants of SS officers, a Polish priest, a pair of novices aspiring to be nuns, a defrocked monk, and more. The uneasy interactions among these disparate people, occasionally bursting into heated argument as their stereotypic assumptions and prejudices emerge to contradict the official reasons for their presence--to atone for the sins of the Holocaust and to forge unity among the various religious and social views they bring with them. In the cold and oppressive environment of the remains of the death camp, the psychological impact of the memories--both stimulated by documentary films and museum exhibits and also evoked by the feelings of the "presence" of the millions of dead--is heavy and unsettling. Olin, who expects to be engaged at a scholarly or academic level, even in approaching his search for evidence of his mother's fate, undergoes strong challenges to his sense of his self--more than just "identity crisis," the near collapse of his sense of who he is and why he continues to live.

Matthiessen has presented intense and powerful characters in earlier works--Far Tortuga, Killing Mr. Watson, especially--but here he is probing deeper and more painfully into the fundamental questions of the relation between our "selves" and our responsibility for behavior--both our own behavior and that which we witness and either condone or try to ignore or, under some circumstances, stand up, oppose, resist, even attempt to prevent or stop altogether. Part of the testing of those human characteristics in this novel comes from the presence of a Mr. G. Earwig (an assumed name, of course) who purposely separates himself from all the others, mocking, reprimanding, denouncing, deeply insulting the others, calling into question all of their values and characters and assumptions. He is, in this way, a person in the mold of Thersites, the mocking cynic and nihilist who appears in Homer's Iliad, but also, even more destructively, in Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida. He becomes the dark side of Olin as the narrative progresses, and his presence, and then his life story (which may or may not be true) serve as catalysts for Olin's own crisis of identity.

There are other elements of Olin's story that are better left for the reader to discover. But as my title for this review indicates, there are no easy ways out of the moral challenges and dilemmas these characters face, and no simple resolution. This novel leaves this reader shaken and impressed. Yes, some parts of it are open to question or criticism, but the quibbles are unworthy of mention. Yes, Olin himself reminds us that many have felt that there is an impropriety, an inauthenticity, even an outright dishonesty in writing about the Holocaust by anyone who did not experience and survive it. From that perspective, all others should be silent. But Matthiessen makes a powerful case for the honest and wrenching effort to confront that history, even as one who comes at it from a position of privileged distance, comfort, abstraction and analysis. Certainly this is a novel worth reading, and more than once.

Adolf Hitler-A Chilling Tale of Propaganda, by Dr. Joseph Goebbels

Reproduced on high quality postcard stock, this original photograph album contains editorials form SS General Major Julius Schreck, Dr. Otto Dietrich, General Wilhelm Bruckner, First Lieutenant Foertsch, and SS General Major Julius Schaub. Distasteful as the propaganda is, this work offers a unique, historical opportunity to view Hitler as he was portrayed to the German People prior to his eruption into the world theater of battle. It also affords us a rare opportunity to glimpse into the mind of Joseph Goebbels, the master propagandist himself, who in large part was responsible for the loyalty and support Hitler was to receive. In this way, Goebbels' propaganda of deification of Adolf Hitler was disseminated to the German People.

A Propaganda Masterpiece
By Kurt Harding
I already own this book in the original German so imagine my surprise when I ordered the book here and received a quite faithful reproduction in English with some introductory text added. The book is not really authored by Dr. Goebbels but is undoubtedly inspired by him and is a propaganda masterpiece. Back in the 1930s, tobacco cards were quite popular, so all pictures in the book are reproductions of the front sides of tobacco cards. The idea with the book was to have the reader fill it in as one might a stamp album, attaching cards acquired on the matching space in the book. This format assured that the book did not become a coffee-table book for mere show, but was actively and eagerly opened regularly as collectors posted newly acquired photos in their proper places. Stamp collecting was extremely popular in Europe and in America during the 1930s as were many associated collecting crazes. National Socialism did not innoculate one against the urge to collect something as this urge was especially strong in Germany. The Nazis were quite aware of the acquisitive nature of the people. The genius of this book uses the acquisitive instints of the people, instilling in them a desire for a complete collection and infusing them with a benign, fatherly portrait of their fuhrer! What a masterstroke! It is said that most German language copies were destroyed by their owners after the war in an attempt to appear to have been apolitical. Fortunately, some copies were saved thus allowing this fabulous reproduction to be available to the public today. This book should serve as a cautionary tale of the power of propaganda. Even those of us who live in relatively free countries and are jaded by a daily barrage of political and commercial propaganda are susceptible to a well-designed and well-orchestrated propaganda campaign.

The Black Side of Marketing
By A Customer
I just got this book yesterday, and stayed up til midnight scan- ning it. The subject matter is repellent, the packaging and mar- keting of Adolf Hitler, for the German nation, but at the same time, it is fascinating to read. Dr. Goebbels utilized some very "modern" ideas to market Hitler, such as using paste-in stickers for booklets, showing Hitler using the then revolutionary concept of flying all over Germany to get to multiple sites for speeches. Giving the impression he was omnipresent, and concerned about all economic and age groups-where ever he popped up.
It is both horrifying to read, because you know what happens even tually, but strangely fascinating, watching how the devil's mar- keter packaged him, complete with glowing testimonies from people coming from all walks of life. In all the photo ops, der fuehrer is shown smiling benevolently, as ecstatic crowds greet him. Yes there are the requisite baby-kissing, attentively listening to children, etc.
So, if you wish to study the black side of marketing and packag- ing a political figure-read this book. And remember it's lessons well when you are asked to vote for someone that is packaged a little too smartly.....there lurks no friend, but a savage mask- ing behind a sheep's clothes.
Well worth the price for it's historical value, as well as the wrenching reality that one has seen such slick packing of polit- ical figures before-remember The Selling of the President?

LET THE READER BEWARE
By A Customer
If you consider yourself an amateur history buff as I do, and is fascinated by tyrants such as Adolf Hitler or Joseph Stalin, this book is one that should interest you.
There are many pictures that one will normally not see nowadays. Pictures of happy Germans fawning over their Fuehrer. The writing is stilted and bad. But it is interesting in how different writers were so uniform in their deification of one man. Under normal circumstances this book would not rate one or two stars due to the poor writing style but the importance and significance of this book makes these a good book for one's collection. But only if the reader has an interest in such drivel.
If one is to believe Joseph Goebbels, the German people loved their Fuehrer in 1936. But did the German people love their Fuehrer in 1946?
