Thin, but useful

This little book is only 110 pages long, of which only 40 really concentrate on bow and arrow setup, tuning, and shooting; the rest is devoted to hunting, bow construction, and a bit of biographical info on Ferguson. And truthfully, it's not terribly well written. Ferguson's strength is as a bowman and teacher, not a writer. But those 40 pages contain a wealth of useful information distilled into almost everything the beginning barebow shooter needs to know.

More experienced bare bow archers may find a lot to disagree with here. For instance, Ferguson shoots only aluminum arrows, and thinks wood is just too variable and inconsistent. That alone will raise more than a few hackles. (Since this book was published, he's brought out his own line of carbon fiber arrows.) But even the most experienced archer will admit that there's a lot to be learned from an archer who can consistently place his shots the way Ferguson does day in and day out.

I have a few bones to pick with Ferguson over his conception of instinctive shooting. He claims that since people are very bad at a task requiring them to estimate distance in yards, it must therefore be impossible to shoot purely "instinctively." As anyone who has read Fred Asbell's books can tell you, that's a bit of a straw man argument. Instinctive shooters don't say to themselves. "Gee, that looks like about 27 yards..." any more than an outfielder thinks "that looks like about 30, maybe 35 yards" before throwing to second base. They just do it, relying on practice and instinct to throw the ball with a high enough trajectory to reach the baseman's glove. When Ferguson says the archer should "become the arrow," he's saying the archer has to internalize the the arrow's trajectory, just as the outfielder has to internalize the ball's trajectory. And obviously, that's exactly what proponents of instinctive archery a saying. In effect, Ferguson's technique is exactly the same as Asbell's or Sorrell's; he's just giving it a different name.

I'm returning to archery, having done a fair bit of recurve shooting with aluminum shafts and sights in the 1970s, and with a longbow and wooden shafts in the 1990s. I bought this book as a refresher in technique and tuning, and while thought I knew a fair bit about shooting barebow, I picked up more useful info from this book than I expected. I'd still recommend that the newcomer to barebow shooting start with G. Fred Asbell's Instinctive Shooting; Ferguson's book adds a different viewpoint, and a number of useful tips on tuning and shooting that complement the Asbell book.

A short but excellent book by the next Howard Hill

This book is a short and enjoyable read by a master that some would say is today's Howard Hill. Fellow Alabamian Byron Ferguson provides a clear description of his techniques of shooting the bare bow, as well as some excellent hunting tips. He relays a few good stories along the way.

The book is not very long, but Ferguson covers all necessary topics from equipment, technique, practice strategy, bow tuning, bow design, hunting equipment and hunting tips. in a few places, I would have liked just a bit more detail, and the black and white photos leave something to be desired. Those are the only reason I didn't give it the full 5 stars.

Must-read for traditional archery

I already owned the book. It was the first one I read on the subject of traditional archery, and it was and remains the foundation of my knowledge base for the sport. I think it would be helpful and a pleasure to read for anyone interested in traditional archery, at any level, so I purchased a copy from Amazon as a gift for a relative who was already versed in traditional archery. He has thoroughly enjoyed it. Of course, anyone familiar with the amazing Byron Ferguson would like this book. I haven't reached the point of becoming the arrow, and I don't know if I get that part, yet. Nevertheless, I highly recommend the book.

not quite a pocket book!

As you can gather from the other reviews the book is as big as everyone says it is. However, the title really describes what it is. An atlas which is a collection of glimpses of some of the most impressive projects over the last 8-10 years. It is useful as a reference and as a starting point for investigating projects of recent times as most are in there.

For an Australian point of view it was great to see some of the impressive works being created in this country - even though they tend to be skewed towards private residences.

Overall well worth adding to the collection, as a source of inspiration. It even encourages me to design as I was forced to design a new bookshelf to store it in.

u must have it, but you will never use it after first time, it's really not practical, it' heavy and hard to use it every time you need some ideas, you gonna grab your medium size book, trust me it's not practical, BUT u mast have it if u'r architect :)

fun- wish there others

A lot of thought & care has gone into this book. It manages to be relatively realistic about difficult topics like war & religion without frightening children (or prudish parents) & makes studying the pictures fun using slapstick moments hidden in the drawings of more serious topics. My only complaint is that inevitably it shows the exclusively western European viewpoint that predominates in almost every other history book aimed at kids (or mainstream adult audiences for that matter). That's not necessarily a bad thing since that's the starting point most Americans will be coming from, but I really wish there was a little more mention along the way of what was going in the Americas, Africa, and Asia during the same periods to give some perspective. Some partner books from those perspectives would be fantastic!

That small complaint aside, here's what you'll find in the book:
* The first spread shows us a Stone Age encampment alongside a river. People make canoes beside skin tipis, dogs fight over scraps, meat is hung to dry, & a shaman performs a ceremony next to a pole supporting antlers. The painting of the forest spreading out in the distance is lush & lovely.
* The second spread shows us the First Farmers about 2000BCE. There is livestock, people practicing with bows & arrows, others dousing a house fire, and our first glimpse of a sacred stone circle that will remain partially visible in ongoing pages. This kind of continuity cleverly teaches an important lesson of history building on & over itself without being preachy about it.
* The Iron Age spread shows people in elaborate Celtic-style plaids & tattoos. A fort has been built on a hill at back- this will go through several iterations as the pages turn. Priests throw iron weapons into the river as an offering- these will be discovered in much later pages in another example of the clever planning given to the illustrations.

* The year 900 sees Viking Raiders. Illustrator Steve Noon paints these pages at sunset, the village lit by an orange glow that parallels the burning buildings destroyed by the Vikings. The fort has been completely overgrown & the village is centered on a stone church. A priest holds up a crucifix to try to ward off the invaders while others flee to avoid being captured as slaves. Noon does a good job of being relatively honest about the horrors of war in a visual style that is bright & cheerful enough so as not to frighten children.
* The Medieval Village of the 1200s has the fort replaced with a stone castle, & the ancient stone circle partially overgrown. The hills have been plowed into agricultural fields & villagers are trading at a market. As in other pictures, certain elements are reproduced at the bottom & top of the page to point out important elements of the scene & the viewer can play a Where's Waldo to locate the mini-scene within the larger setting. An example on this spread is someone delivering reeds by boat to avoid forest outlaws.
* The Medieval Town of the 1400s has new towers being added to the castle while the stone circle has been completely lost in the trees. This is another example of Noon's weaving historical truths into his illustrations in a subtle way. The disappearance of the ancient sacred site is not pointed out but some observant children are sure to notice it & ask about it, leading to good educational opportunity. The viewer is invited to guess a name for a rowdy inn based on the sign hung out front. Typical slapstick humor is provided by a fashionable couple walking unfortunately beneath a window where a woman empties a chamberpot. A boatman has accidentally dredged up one of the helmets sacrificed centuries ago by a a pagan priest.
* In the 1500s, The Plague Strikes. The scene is painted at night, with the dark blue tones underlining the somber situation. Soldiers are blockading people from leaving the town, a brave priest tends to the dying, & an apothecary attempts to discover a cure.
* In the 1600s, the town is Under Attack. Noon casually says that it is due to "disputes over territory & new ideas about religion". Again, he does not preach about the situation, but also doesn't think that kids need the kind of purely saccharine story that will only make them write off history as boring fairy tales. The castle is being burned & bombed, as are all the buildings of the town. People are hiding & an innkeeper is being threatened by pikes, but no actual murders nor tortures are portrayed. A couple soldiers lie face down, one cries out in pain & grasps his arm, one is hit by a falling sign. It is up to the adult sharing the book with a child to decide how graphic a description of war the child is ready for. The illustration itself looks bright & adventurous & would be unlikely to frighten any but the smallest children.
* In Age of Elegance, the wealthy trade in wigs while others sells goods in the streets or sweep chimneys for a living. The castle is in ruins & the leading family has moved to a Lord's mansion further up the hill.
* In the Grim Times of the early 1800s, children work while a man sits with a newspaper over his head to catch the leaks from a ceiling he can't afford to fix. A barge delivers coal from the mines depicted far off in the distance to fire the factories which belch smoke over the top of the illustration.
* In the late 1800s, we move From Town to City. The city is a-bustle with new inventions like a steam engine in its own train station, a postman from the new, cheap postal service, & a man with a camera taking photos. The Lord's mansion has been joined by a pile of houses spreading into the growing suburbs.
* Finally, The Street Today has high-rises in the suburbs, businesspeople using cell phones & computers, and, importantly, the castle ruins now serving as a heritage site in the center of the modern city.
The final pages have a timeline that does address world history, & a glossary of terms.

Nice intro

I bought this (as well as A City Through Time) as an introduction to the idea of time and history for my 4 year old. So far, she loves looking at the pictures and it does seem to be helping with the concept of time passing and history. This is a picture book, but there are little notes about the specific time period for that page in the margins that older kids may find interesting (ie, what a typical woman's dress may look like in a certain era, or a tidbit about a musical instrument used in that period, etc)

A fascinationg book on history.

The write ups on this book caught my eye so I ordered it for my 8 and 11 year old grandchildren. They enjoyed seeing the change in an area throughout the years as did my 32 year old daughter and her husband. I found myself engrossed in the pictures, related facts and historic transition over time. I am sure this will be a book that my grandchildren will refer to as they continue to take history classes. The book will bring history to life.

Perfect highlights guidebook!

This "highlights" guidebook was exactly what we needed. We were going to be in Ireland from weekend to weekend, with a rental car, and wanted to see as much as we could along our circular route. This was the perfect resource in order for us to plan and exciting - and logical - itinerary on the go. We hit many of the must-sees and came back satisfied with the way we used our time. In the age of online travel planning it was the ideal companion guidebook to make the most of our vacation - and no wifi required! Highly recommended.

I love the hard copy version. Depth and breadth of information. The digital version is disappointing. Hard to explain but the content is only as good as what is at the other end of the links, whch provide the photos and depth of ifo that you get..Fortunately, I had some digital credits so only had to pay about half price for my digital copy. Will see how it does when I'm in Ireland.Using the Kindle versions in ipad and my wonderful Kindle Fire HDX.

I never thought I would enjoy a book written by Margaret Atwood because of the lousy impression I had assumed when I would listen to her during interviews. She seemed to have an attitude of distaste towards interview questions and perhaps the Interviewer. However, I had to admit to myself that I often only heard snippets of these interviews and made a poor judgment based on very little information - that's not fair.

After reading the sample, I went ahead and bought the ebook version of "The Edible Woman". Well, golly gee, was I ever off base! She is a terrific writer!! I enjoyed the rich descriptions of each setting and the well-developed characters as they moved through the interesting storyline. The ending was excellent because I could not have predicted the outcome, making this book a great read from start to finish! (My apologies to Margaret Atwood, fellow Canadian, for my hasty impression after having so little information about you. Bad Canadian, bad, I am).

I like Margaret Atwood books but The Edible Woman will not be my favourite. I appreciate the mastery of the language - the novel is written with irony and humor and is full of metaphor. I'm sure that for the late 60's it seemed very modern. However it isn't an engaging story and sometimes I had to force my way through this book.

This is my favorite book so far by Atwood. It was quick read, which is unfortunate since it was really engrossing. I think my favorite character is Duncan, which is probably because I have a thing for emotionally tortured men.

Featuring poetry and short stories in addition to essays, DIGGING IN will engage your students like no other text. An introductory chapter on reading literature and a glossary following the last chapter give students all the resources they need to be successful.

Most of the readings are contemporary, and the topics cover a broad extent of human experience. The chapters—Family History. GrowingUp/Growing Old, Learning and Teaching, The Emotional Side, Work and Dreams, and Issues/Positions—offer instructors an opportunity to teach within a theme.

For each of the over 60 selections, the author has included:

• A short biography of the author.
• A Before Reading prompt. This prompt will start students thinking about the topic of the piece before they encounter the author's treatment of that topic, engaging them more thoroughly in the work.
• To Understand questions. Some of these test a student's basic understanding of what has happened in the piece. Others require more critical thinking and ask students to ponder particular parts or aspects of the work.
• To Write questions. These ask for personal responses to the literature.
• Ideas for Writing. These writing prompts address the general theme of the chapter (though not one particular work) and are meant to offer opportunities for formal paper writing.

If you are holding this book in your hands, you are at least considering the notion of teaching your developmental composition class with literary selections. I applaud you for this. For years I've been asking myself why we don't assign literature to our students who are just beginning to develop their writing skills. So much accessible and enjoyable fiction, poetry, and nonfiction could be offered to our students, yet traditionally we have taught our classes with the same kinds of readings they have been exposed to over and over again—articles about current issues. I don't intend to criticize that approach; one can certainly teach reading and writing skills successfully with that kind of text. However, I hope you agree that teaching developmental composition with literature offers exciting possibilities for both students and instructors.

What You Will Find in this Book

This book starts with an introduction to the three genres of literature I've included: poetry, short stories, and essays. (Certainly, drama is another important literary genre, but for space considerations, I have not included any plays.) This chapter gives students a brief introduction to reading literature with a focus on some essential questions they can ask of each genre. I offer the basic vocabulary for discussing literature but keep it deliberately simple and not focused on memorizing terms or concepts. More than anything, this chapter is aimed at helping students feel comfortable with literature.

The main feature of this book is the literature itself. I've included poems, short stories, and essays. You will find that most of the selections are accessible for students who are still developing their reading skills. A range exists, of course. Pieces like Tim O'Brien's "Beginning" might challenge students a bit, but I have taken care to choose selections that are generally comprehensible on a first read. Most of the readings are contemporary, by well-known and lesser-known writers, and the topics cover a broad extent of human experience. The chapters—Family History, Growing Up/Growing Old, Learning and Teaching, The Emotional Side, Work and Dreams, and Issues/Positions—offer instructors an opportunity to teach within a theme, although you will find that an individual selection in one chapter might easily have been placed in another.

Each chapter starts with a brief introduction to its theme and a preview of the literary selections. Students can read this to get a general sense of what they can look forward to in the chapter. Each selection of literature is preceded by a short biography of the author as well as a Before Reading prompt. This prompt will start students thinking about the topic of the piece before they encounter the author's treatment of that topic, engaging them more thoroughly in the work. Following each poem, story, or essay, students will find To Understand and To Write questions. Some of the To Understand questions test a student's basic understanding of what has happened in the piece. Others require more critical thinking and ask students to ponder particular parts or aspects of the work. The To Write questions ask for personal responses to the literature. These can be used in several ways. You can assign them as take-home journal assignments, or you might use them as quick-write prompts at the beginning of class. Either way, students will be more prepared for class discussion if they have done some writing in response to the literature. These prompts might also be used for formal writing assignments, depending on the goals you have for those assignments. In general, the language in both the To Understand and To Write questions is not the language of literary analysis nor of literary criticism. Students should be able to read the work and answer the questions without being intimidated by terminology or theory.

At the end of each chapter, you will find a list of Ideas for Writing. These writing prompts address the general theme of the chapter (though not one particular work) and are meant to offer opportunities for formal paper writing. You might have students choose one assignment (or you might choose one for them) after they have read all or some of the literary selections for that chapter. I've phrased these prompts so you can use them for paragraph or essay assignments, depending on the direction of your class.

A glossary following the last chapter is a final feature of this book. Although the literature in this text is quite accessible, you may find it helpful to direct your students to the glossary for words that are not familiar to them. Overall, I hope this book provides both students and instructors an enjoyable classroom experience.

My wife gave this to me for Valentine's as I commute a total of 2 hours every day. I couldn't wait to get back into the car to listen to this fabulous CD set, all 24 hours of them. The narrator's voice is appropriately animated and brings the action to life. The true account of these four men's lives and their life changing experience during combat in the Pacific flows in an easy to follow manner. I plan to listen to the whole series over again!!

This recording is very easy on the ears. The narrator is articulate and not monotone. The book follows different soldiers' personal stories during the war, so some depth is understandably omitted. This was a great listen.

Narrator mispronounces many place names

I've listened to many audiobooks and expected more when I got this audiobook as a gift. By comparison, the narrator fell short in at least two significant ways:

1. In other good audiobooks, the narrator develops different voices for different characters. Not so here. It's a monotone.
2. When you hear place names pronounced, it sounds so elementary because he sounds it out syllable by syllable. In other words, he didn't do his homework to find out how it should be pronounced.

I slogged through it & listened to the whole thing but will be careful to avoid this narrator in the future or buy the print edition. As for the writing of Hugh Ambrose, he's not as good as his father but maybe this pairing of author and narrator was justified.

A Very Complete Guide

The game is not a very easy one and most of the puzzles are nearly impossible to complete without this guide...and the guide delivers. It is very explanatory for the puzzles and sometimes includes a helpful illustration for the reader. However, these pictures are in black and white and are sometimes hard to figure out what is being shown. There is very little extra content in the book, but it does have an appendix with every map in the game.

One of the nice features in the book are little boxes that are on some pages that either give a Tip, a Note, a Warning, or a Hint. The hints give you alternative ways to play some of the puzzles. The game is not linear and there are multiple endings so these help guide you to the ending you'd want. Warnings warn you about lethal things to come in the game. It's a point and click game but you can die. The notes just give a quick bit of info that might be useful or just interesting. And the tips literally tell you what to do in baby steps. There is a part of the game where you can play poker (Texas Hold 'em) and the tips literally tell you how to play poker if you don't know.

The guide itself is written in a most interesting way. It's written in first person as though the character in the game is telling you what he is doing. For example, instead of the book telling you you'll need to cross a bridge to continue, the book says "After crossing the bone bridge..." It's fun just to read on its own because it's like a science fiction novel. The book even includes the dialogue situations between characters, and it somehow. Not only is it in first person but it does keep the personality of the main character from the game.

The price of the book here on Amazon is the best I've ever seen it. The game is not too rare, but according to other websites this book is VERY rare. Dealers on eBay were trying to charge over 75USD for it. On Amazon I purchased the book brand new still in the shrink wrap (despite having been released in 1996) for 17USD.

On a side note, I also love this book because of the nostalgia. There are advertisements in the front and back of the book for other PC games from the same time and its so nostalgic seeing an advert for TEK Wars and a BBS to go along with it. It just reminds me of the time this game was released and it makes the book that much more memorable to look through.

Great Book

If you have played the game u have probably been lost in several occasions. With this guide to the game you can see who is behind the pausing of the pocket universes. This game has many puzzles and unique gameplay and it could be challenging without this guide. If you have the game and decide that you dont know how to get around, buy this Book!!
