Great Set!

I usually don't read sci-fi, but I like Arthur Byrne's writing style so I thought I would give it a try.
I'm glad I did! The author's wry sense of humor is evident in this fun enjoyable entertainment.
This is the story of the Starship Magellan. It is still adrift in space ten years after an alien attack.
In the first book we are introduced to the survivors that were trapped in Cargo Bay 37.
They were fortunate to have supplies to set up hydroponic gardening and chickens for eggs.
They want to expand beyond their fortress, but danger lurks on the ship in the form of
the alien attackers as well as other survivors known as scavengers.
Each of the three books continues the story, with the style being a little different in each book.
The second book, Asin's Hope was my favorite.
The third book, Red Swarm was "can't put it down until I finish reading it" exciting!

fun to get to know these characters and the wild world they are trying to live in

A surprisingly enjoyable read. The story followed the journey of likable protagonists that realize redemption as they pursue vision of restoration. They pursued an overwhelmingly difficult mission that only grows more insurmountable as the unique an vast setting reveals its mysteries to our unlikely heroes. I was compelled by the themes of friendship, reconciliation, and authentic leadership and service fueled by values like hope and respect. I was expecting nothing more than some mindless sifi and found myself caring about the plight of the characters and inspired by the arc of their story.

Great candidate for the next space-based mini-series!

A rollicking good series. Greatly enjoyed this story. Hints of Battlestar Galactica but BIGGER. Is about a group of friends managing to survive in an interstellar colonization ship of incredible size. Lots of ship to explore and many hair-raising adventures doing it. I could definitely see this being turned into a mini-series.

This book chronicles the life of one of the great figures of nineteenth-century politics, from his early years, where he showed such precocious intelligence that he was accepted at Edinburgh University aged just fourteen years, through his years as a formidable lawyer, to his distinguished Parliamentary career. A fine example of political biography, it should grace the shelf of anyone interested in the great men of British politics.

Great childhood memories!

I loved Richard Scarry's books as a child. For years and years, whenever I would see the author's name I would vaguely remember my favorite story about a bone but I could never remember the name of the story or which book it was in. Now that I have a 3 year old daughter, I recently inherited another one of Richard Scarry's books from my older cousin. While that book is great too, unfortunately, it didn't have my favorite story so I was on a mission to find it! After a little research, I found out the story was the Teeny Tiny Woman and that it was in this Animal Nursery Tales book. I was so glad to find a used copy on Amazon and as soon as I showed the book to my mom she remembered it too! Reading the Teen Tiny Woman to my daughter brought back so many fond memories. Added bonus, my daughter seems to love the book too. :-)

Richard Scarry's Animal Nursery Tales

There are many, many fairy tales books out there. I wanted something that would hold my 2 year-old daughter's attention while I read to her at night. I thought a good place to start would be some of the fairy tales I remembered as a kid, stories such as the "Three Little Pigs" and "Goldilox and the Three Bears."

Most of the fairy tale books I found were composed mainly of text with a few antiquated pictures every now and then. And this is fine for older children, but no so for a two year old. When I came across this book, I knew I had struck gold.

Those of you with children not familiar with Richard Scarry's books are missing out on some of the greatest learning/reading tools out there. Scarry's books are visually appealing -- multiple drawings of delightful animal characters on each page, moving the story along and giving your child plenty of details to view while listening.

As a child of the 70's, I was already familiar with Scarry's books. I must have read each of them dozens of times as a kid, pouring over and appreciating the details in every picture. Let's face it, the way to get kids into reading is to make it interesting; this is certainly a good way to start them off early.

If you're looking for a good way to get the kids interested in reading, or if you just want a quality book of fairy tales for the children in your life, look no further than this one. It's a book your children will cherish and, like myself, read to their own some day.

Very well written and easy to follow. Extremely short introduction to biostatistics almost completely lacking in depth, but a great first book to get your feet wet. If you need a very general idea of biostats in a single afternoon, it is perfect.

Great review book for medical boards in the USA & Canada

Just received a copy (not from Amazon). I'm enjoying it so far. Many medical students I know and some practicing doctors tend to dread biostatistics/epidemiology as a subject, but this book is an easy read. It oversimplifies some of the most difficult concepts that I used to find tough. And that is why I believe it will definitely help for any type of USMLE/board certification exam in North America (USA & Canada). I will come back to give detailed feedback after reading the entire book.

I have received the book for a custom evaluation, as the editors were interested how helpful this bnook could be in terms of preparation for the USMLE. The subject, in itself, is quite dreadful for the majority of test takers, since it is usually out of scope for medical students due to the nature of it (I would say the person needs a good level of abstraction, which is a prerogative of a mathematician-type mindset), as well as many of us prefer to put all the hardship of studying into more heavily tested subjects on USMLE (pathology, microbiology etc.), rather than cramming on Biostatistics. It is a well-known fact that there are no solidly well written text books for this subject and those that hit the market still fail to ease the way of studying the subject. Most of us wind up studying First Aid biostatistics or Kaplan lecture notes, supplementing it with UWorld Qbank. At the end, you realize that no matter how meticulous you want to be in mastering the subject, you come to the conclusion that you still miss the depth. I mean, you learn how to make 2 by 2 tables and how to calculate sensitivity, specificity, PPV etc, but when it comes to slightly modified questions, you begin to realize that either you're born without genes that promote you grasping the highly abstract knowledge of statistics, or that the book that would educate you to master the subject was not yet written. That's why I was very keen on reading "Medical Statistics Made Easy written by authors from the UK.

My understanding is that the book was written just to give you a fairly easy way to go into the depth of statistical analysis for healthcare professionals, but not for those who prepare for USMLE. Nevertheless, it covers all the necessary topics for the test and, I have to admit,i makes it quite digestible. The structure of the book is awesome from the standpoint that you are being notified in advance that the topic you are about to start reading is easy to understand or in the opposite, is hard to get. The book also has way more covered topics, that you need for USMLE (considering, that we all tend to shrink our attention to the most important and highly tested things, this might be one of cons to consider). One more thing to consider. This book has only Biostatistics, meaning that Epidemiology is missing. For some reason, the authors or the editors decided to create the Epidemiology part as a separate book, which is also available and probably ( I haven't had a chance to review this one) contains the other important part of the USMLE preparation.

I find this book amazing if you are really trying to get a solid understanding of medical statistics and have enough time to master your knowledge: it is easy to understand, fun to read, and it covers every possible topic. However, you have to keep in mind that it was not written as an USMLE study guide that would point your attention to certain specific aspects of the subject from the standpoint of Step 1 or 2. Also, you'd probably have to buy another book from these authors that covers "epidemiology," and for this reason, I give it 4 stars.

About the Author
Marcia Nahikian Nelms is currently a professor of clinical health and rehabilitation sciences and director of the dietetic internship in the Division of Medical Dietetics-College of Medicine at Ohio State University and a registered dietician. She has practiced as a dietician and public health nutritionist for over 25 years. Her clinical expertise centers on the development and practice of evidence-based nutrition therapy for a variety of conditions including diabetes, gastrointestinal diseases, and hematology-oncology for both pediatric and adult populations, as well as the development of alternative teaching environments for students receiving their clinical training. She is the lead author of Nutrition Therapy and Pathophysiology (2016) and Medical Nutrition Therapy: A Case Study Approach (2014), both published by Cengage Learning. In addition, she has contributed to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Nutrition Care Manual sections on gastrointestinal disorders and is the author of numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and chapters for other texts. Dr. Nahikian Nelms has received the Governor's Award for Outstanding Teaching for the State of Missouri, the award for Outstanding Dietetic Educator in Missouri and Ohio, and the PRIDE award from Southeast Missouri State University in recognition of her teaching.

Kenedy then covers dry vs. fresh, and provides recipes for several pastas and for three authentic sauces that form the foundation for many of the sauces in the book. From the obscure story of Strozzapreti ("priest stranglers") to the humorous warming red pepper and whiskey sauce for Radiatore pasta, or "radiators," one learns how shapes are created to maximize surface area and sauce delivery. A Pasta Anthropology ... and then Dinner :)

As the full title states, "The Perfect Shape + The Perfect Sauce = THE GEOMETRY OF PASTA," so the talents of book designer Caz Hildebrand + London chef Jacob Kenedy = this terrific book.

Part history-of-pasta and part cookbook, it begins with an overview of pastas (southern Italian peasants' plain semolina to wealthy northerners' incorporation of egg and different starches) and tomato sauces (also varying from light to rich), and the concept of matching the delicacy/sturdiness of a pasta to that of a sauce. And then comes that geometry -- the actual pairings of those shapes and sauces via a 270-page alphabetic encyclopedia of dozens and dozens of pasta shapes, including:

* A short history of each pasta (referencing climate, culture and politics/economics), for example that intricate pastas were made "when housewives had to fill long winter evenings," and the delicate and haughty pastas of the Renaissance, which "specialist nuns would make in their convents";
* A b/w graphic of its shape (see page samples near the book's cover image, above);
* In some cases, recipes for making that shape of pasta at home;
* In all cases, recipes for sauces/fillings suited to that shape;
* Suggestions for other sauces (an Index makes it easy to locate sauce recipes).

I'd expected this book to be glossy and slightly oversized, so was surprised to find it the size and construction of a hardcover novel. While that doesn't sound like a book to be taken into the kitchen and later wiped down, you'll want to do so -- it contains recipes for every level of cook, from quick sauces with a few common ingredients, to sauces involving a dozen ingredients and progressive steps that are mini-tutorials in cooking technique. They include olive oil and/or butter and a wide range of fish, fowl and meat. Most serve 2-4 people as a main course; some serve 6-8 and a few feed a crowd. But even if you're an armchair foodie with little intention of preparing the recipes, this book's design and interesting (even amusing) discussion make it a delightful read.

Unique, delicious and quite fabulous!

I have never seen a book like "The Geometry of Pasta" before. A graphic design inspired book about pasta? Black and white, no photographs and yet illustrated artistically and accurately. This book was clearly created by people who care deeply about pasta, who have studied it from all angles and perhaps obsess about it, just a little? Which is not a bad thing!

I tested several of the recipes and for the most part, were wonderful and delicious. I still wonder why recipes like the medium tomato sauce, which clearly the author is not a fan of, were included in the book. Yet it is that honesty and casual approach to the writing I enjoyed immensely.

Although the book may appear clinical, I assure you, it is not. There is personality throughout. I for one will treasure my copy. I have been looking for a book on pasta dishes that range from the simple to the complex. It has the beautiful simple pasta recipe you associate with genius of Italian cooking, yet there are also recipes that use oxtail and rabbit for the more adventurous and bold cook. Either way, there is a lot for everyone to explore and enjoy.

lots of information about pasta

This is a different type of book. I don't think it is a cook book, but it kind of is. What is does is give you information on the different types of pastas', what their function is and how the pasta is made. Then provides the recipe. There are so many different types, different ingredients and cooking methods. It describes the origin of the recipe which is interesting. There are some fantastic and unusual recipes in this book. It is one of the more interesting books concerning cooking that we have. Plus, its interesting reading. Also it has fantastic sauce recipes.
