About the Author

Frederick G. Crane is an executive professor of Entrepreneurship & Innovation at the College of Business at Northeastern University, Editor of the Journal of the Academy of Business Education, and co-founder of Ceilidh Insights LLC, an innovation management training, intellectual property consulting, and consumer insight company. He was formerly a professor of marketing and entrepreneurship at the University of New Hampshire and a chair and full professor at Dalhousie University. He currently teaches courses in entrepreneurship, innovation, and entrepreneurial marketing.

His academic research activities have resulted in more than 100 publications, including fifteen books. Additionally, he currently serves on the editorial boards of several academic journals. His current research stream intersects the domains of marketing, entrepreneurship, corporate venturing, and innovation, and he is conducting ongoing research on the psychology of entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial education, entrepreneurial branding, and innovation readiness. Dr. Crane is also an award-winning educator who has received numerous honors for teaching excellence over the past twenty years.

Do not waste your money and time on this book.

I have been trying to work with this book for a couple of days now. This is not a book for someone who is just beginning with Android. I have plenty of experience with Java so that is not an issue and I had no problems setting up the SDK to work with Eclipse. This book assumes that you know things that it fails to cover in enough depth to explain how to accomplish the task you are trying to do. Although, I have not tried all the examples, out of frustration I copied and pasted all the files from the second example into the IDE and it fails to compile. For the tiny book that it is there appear to be many mistakes. If you are looking for a beginning book that is worth your money, keep looking and pass on this one.

Clear, concise with plenty of examples

This is an excellent introduction into programming apps for Android devices. The book opens by giving background reading on the Android system, its architecture, fundamentals of Android program execution, and gives a very clear explanation of the software you'll need to get up and running to make your first Android app, such as the Eclipse development environment, JDK and so forth.

You will start by producing the usual 'hello world' application, followed by a simple calculator app. From there you will learn how to read and write to files, and how to interact with various hardware components such as GPS and onboard sensors, right through to more advanced Internet-borne applications.

The content is very clear and simple to understand, and is packed with example code which I love. Furthermore the source code from the apps can be downloaded from the publishers website. Highly recommended.

Excellent introduction and reference to android app development

I found this book a great guide to the start of Android app development. It went through the set up required to write and run your first android application in a very short time!

This book was clear to understand with lots of illustrations and well documented code examples. It went from the basics of a very first application through to developing user interfaces and many other topics including GPS, widgets and media handling amongst others.

Since first reading it and after developing several applications on the Market I found this still served as a good reference
book and source of other application ideas.

Thoroughly Recommended.

Absolutely perfect

I have read this book thoroughly and I love it. It's better than any book of it's kind, and I would recommend it absolutely. I do, in fact, whenever I get the chance.
I own a bunch of books like this (including a couple by Robin Williams), but no other book is written (and presented!) so clearly. McWade is both a designer, making things look good, and a communicator, making things clear. He knows his stuff, but also knows how to make it accessible. And it's worked for me. I'm no professional graphic designer, but I was able to improve the look, and more importantly the usability, of all our corporate paper documents because of what I learned from this book. My partner is amazed (and very pleased). A very good $20 investment.
Though I've been interested in design and typography for years, it wasn't until I read Before & After that I really felt I had the specific tools to make it work. He gives very specific advice and recommendations (point and pica sizes), but still gives you the confidence and know-how to deviate from his recommendations.
Two nits: while everything is explained, not everything is explained in order. For instance, on page 11 he's telling me to use Century Light Condensed 16/18, but it's not until page 37 that I discover that the 16 is the font size and 18 is the leading. That only happens a couple of places, but it something he should have fixed.
Secondly, a few of the examples were clearly written a decade ago and not updated. The principles are still completely valid (and very, very good). But the color scheme on page 160 was so 1980s it was distracting. Sad, since that was hands down the best (and most comprehensive) chapter in the book: "Create a do-it-all business portfolio." Buy it for that section alone.
Seriously, no small business should exist without this book.

Not just Before and After...

So many redesign books say "this is before" and "this is after." But this one has starts with how to design it and then shows a before and after to demonstrate. I like the callouts on why the each part of the layout was done and why it works so that it can be duplicated on my own. The designs also say when that layout should be used. For example, the digest-size newsletter says it's "great for short runs and small budgets" though the author says an example of this layout is Reader's Digest. I don't think of that magazine has having a short run or small budget. But yes, it is smaller.

Some of the vocabulary is unknown to this new designer. For example, on a newsletter each area is explained but what is a kicker? What is a deckhead? He even says that the kicker box touches the edge, but doesn't say what it is. From the context of the layout, I guess it's the name of the magazine, but the kicker has a byline. So maybe not.

There is a lot of great information on the different types of layout, but I'll jump forward to photo layouts since that's one of the things I am working on now. The before and after are dramatically different. And instead of just showing you the after, he shows how the layout came to be step-by-step. The progress photos are a great complement to the simplistic illustrations which I think are called wireframes. There are also tips a non-designer might not notice like overlaps add depth and a reminder to check for trapped space.

I like all the random tips scattered throughout the book that aren't necessarily design, but a good designer probably would probabl know. For example, in the advertising section the author has a tip on taking a color photo. The brief instructions are illustrated with backdrop placement, angle of lights, and camera position.

The book is great as a read or reference book. I can see myself referring to it for upcoming print projects. I will apply some of the design ideas to my web projects, though there isn't a web layout demonstrated. I wish there were.

A little too self centered for my taste

I agree that this is a good read for anyone who is new to hospital patient care. It can be difficult for a new grad to understand the emotional roller coaster that a patient can be on as the result of a hospital admission. And not all but most newcomers to hospital care also tend to be very young and usually haven't ever been a patient themselves, except for maybe having tonsils taken out.

However, as a hospital clinician of many years, I found the author to be a little too self absorbed and ego centric for my taste, especially the parts where he seems to think that everyone should tolerate his unacceptable behavior no matter what. It seems to reflect the patients of today who have an unbelievably entitled attitude when they enter the hospital, as if they check their manners at the door and consider it a free for all. I've experienced the younger and younger patients get ruder and ruder and it makes me glad that I'm less than 10 years shy of retirement.

I've had 13 surgeries myself, have been in pain that had me climbing out of my skin, but never felt the need to scream or swear at people. In my opinion, there is NEVER a situation that gives a patient the right to be verbally abusive with ANYONE who is trying to help them (except for severe dementia cases where the patient has no idea where they are in the first place and are usually terrified.)

I did tough it and finish the book, but it went directly into the sell-back bag. Definitely not a keeper.

A must read for anyone in the health profession!

Glancing over the cover of "The Other End of the Stethoscope", I noticed two things: first, inside this book would be 33 "insights" for excellent patient care; and second, the picture of the man in the stethoscope bell. I was intrigued. I wondered how this man with the dark sunglasses on the cover was going to impart pearls of wisdom through his writing to me - a wide-eyed and anxious first-semester nursing student. I was instantly pulled into Marcus Engel's story of loss, pain, recovery, and perseverance as soon as I turned the first page. I couldn't put the book down. I gleaned so much from his anecdotes; each chapter telling of different attributes and traits that I wanted (or didn't want, in some cases) as I started on the road to becoming an RN.

This book is definitely a must read for anyone in the health profession, or anyone thinking about getting into the health profession.

I'd also like to add if you have the chance to attend one of Marcus' speaking engagements, please don't pass on the opportunity!

Much thumbed and always to hand

This is my bible. It's very specifically designed for practical learning through a series of practical excercises, each one focused on one or two particular techniques. The finished result of each excercise is a beautiful, wearable piece of jewellery - and, for a student, it is, I think, the best of all books to learn from.

The true beauties and values of this book, however, lie in the appendixes and tables of measurements and how to calculate measurements, volumes, weights - and in the fact that I have always been able to find the answer to any particular problem I face at the bench somewhere in its pages. I lost my original, full colour copy, and have been reduced to a black and white edition. If you can get either, add it to your library.

Project book

Most of the information I have figured out over a 45 year career of 'self-teaching'. The projects are explained well and are challenging. Not much 'smithing'. I will keep looking for a comprehensive treatise. "Metalwork and Enamelling" by Maryon is a better reference despite the difficulty in sourcing some of the materials. In many cases there are more effective modern substitutes and it would be nice to have a reference that explains their uses.

In his time, the late Francis Bacon was regarded both as England's ``most important living painter'' and as a ``cheap sensationalist.'' This excellent biography reveals a dramatic self- mythologizer who painted brilliantly enough to realize his self- cast, epic-tragic role. Bacon created a closely guarded myth of his excessive, tumultuous personal life, never wanting his enigmatic, powerfully disturbing paintings to be explained away with a simple biographical anecdote. He also blocked biographies from being published, and destroyed many of his paintings that didn't pass muster. Peppiatt, a friend of the artist's and the editor of Art International, respects Bacon's controlling, antireductionist instinct--not out of deference, but because no brief catalog of life experiences could explain the complex horror of any one of Bacon's paintings. The artist spent his early years in Ireland and England. He was as flamboyantly gay as the times would allow and was thrown out of the family by his father, who caught him wearing Mrs. Bacon's underwear. He traveled to Berlin and Paris and lived on the edge, associating with high society and low-lifes alike--a social fluency he retained his entire life. He endured, and sometimes enjoyed, beatings from various lovers. He drank to excess, took pills, and slept little. Ultimately, Bacon synthesized an artistic territory distinctly his own; he was ``insufficiently surreal'' to join the surrealists and too figurative to be an abstractionist. The unsettling power of his work eventually brought throngs of visitors to the most prestigious galleries in Europe and America. The Master of the Craft

As is the case with any artist, be they a writer, painter or musician, the key to understanding their work is all in the lives they have led. Francis Bacon, our subject at hand, was an extremely complex individual. Grew up with a father who rather distained his "pansy" son. Francis was afflicted with asthma from an early age, although he eventually grew to have an exceptionally hearty constitution. In fact, even though he was a heavy drinker and crawled the pubs deep into the night, he always woke up in the morning for a full day at the canvas. The author of this exceptionally well written biography knew Francis Bacon up close, and his revelations about Francis Bacon's relationships with Peter Lacy, George Dyer and John Edwards (beneficiary of Bacon's entire estate) are integral to understanding the work. That said, love was a rather sadomasochistic exercise for Francis Bacon, and his artwork continually evoked the tension of violence as well.

My favorite part of the book has to do with George Dyer. George was an exceptionally handsome and endearing figure, and according to myth (as set forth in film "Love Is the Devil") the relationship started when George, your typical bungling burglar, broke into Bacon's studio and got caught by the painter. More than lucky this was for Bacon, who liked his men rough around the edges, and any criminal connection on their part was an added bonus. Bacon grew up among the upper classes but preferred to mix with East End types, which here in the States would transfer as "blue collar lower middle class." George Dyer became a muse for Bacon, and his persona turns up in many of his greatest paintings. In fact, one of Bacon's most accomplished triptychs is a portrayal of George Dyer's last living day while staying at a French hotel, immediately prior to a huge Bacon exhibition there. George died as the result of an overdose bought on by depression, and when the exhibition opened the next day Francis Bacon famously soldiered on as if nothing had happened. But in all reality, Mr. Bacon carried the heavy burden of guilt for George's death, which was essentially a suicide, and those feelings inevitably fueled the many George centric panels that followed.

Anyone interested in interpreting the not so transparent work of Francis Bacon needs to read this book. Have enjoyed it thoroughly and have read it multiple times. Actually, this book is so dense with insight, I would venture to say a second reading is all but required.

One Of The Best Written Biographies Ever!

I wish my late fiance (British) had lived to see me delving into one of his favorite artists, Francis Bacon. He would be stunned at my complete turn-around. Until recently, anything Francis Bacon was a total turn-off. His work, anything about him. Then I saw LOVE IS THE DEVIL and cannot get enough information about this brilliant but demon-driven man. This book is so intelligently and sympathetically written. It is a rather extensive book that I hated to put down. The author must have interviewed every person Bacon had known since childhood to get the background he covers. Family, nanny (who played an enormous role in his childhood and adulthood), the men, the women, the enemies, the friends, his work, his feelings about his work. I bought my copy from amazon.com but it came from the UK in no time. If you have any desire to learn anything about the artist (who was born 100 years ago this year), I suggest you get a copy immediately before it is out of print. I am hoping that the retrospective of his work that is supposed to take place this year in NYC will generate enough interest that these books will become readily available again. See LOVE IS THE DEVIL (with Derek Jacobi & Daniel Craig) and then read this book. This book defies the myth that Bacon met George Dyer when he fell from his skylight one night to rob him. Farson's book says this is the story he always heard. It is the first scene in the film. But Peppiatt claims they met in a bar. I rather prefer the falling from the skylight version myself. Once you have read Farson and Peppiatt's books, get 7 REECE MEWS FRANCIS BACON'S STUDIO. A small, lovely color photography book of his studio after his death. You have to read that one with a magnifying glass so that you don't miss a single item on the page. Well worth the trouble. Graham would be so proud of me! Finally, I understand what all the fuss was about.

The Best Biography of Bacon

If one is searching for a "Life" of F. Bacon, this is the one to read. It has been revised and updated from the original hardcover edition, which was praised when it first appeared. Peppiatt knew Bacon during the later periods of the painter's life. There are many descriptions of first-hand experiences. Among critical studies focusing on Bacon, three writers who knew Bacon during his lifetime are: John Russell (Thames & Hudson), David Sylvester (interview collections) and Michel Leiris (Rizzoli, 1983 in English translation). All three are excellent.
